Bigfork, Montana – uAvionix today announced, in partnership with R Cubed Engineering (R3E), their selection as supplier of a secure, miniaturized military “microIFF” transponder for the Boeing Insitu RQ-21A Blackjack fleet. These Small, Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems (STUAS) provide the United States Navy and Marine Corps with critical battlefield Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

The uAvionix RT-2087/ZPX microIFF is the world’s smallest miniaturized military mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponder, weighing in at only 53 grams. The RT-2087/ZPX is currently in certification testing with the Department of Defense (DoD) Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System Identification Friend or Foe Program Office (AIMS PO), with expected Mark XIIB certification in January 2021.

Integration efforts to equip RQ-21A STUAS with the uAvionix RT-2087/ZPX microIFF is being accomplished in coordination with PMA-213 (Naval Air Traffic Management Systems), PMA-209 (Air Combat Electronics Programs), and PMA-263 (Naval and Marine Corps Small Tactical Unmanned Systems).

Mode 5 IFF technology is a cryptographically-secure Combat ID system designed to prevent fratricide in theater. The RT-2087/ZPX not only provides transponder military modes 1,2,3, and 5, but also civil modes A, C, S, along with ADS-B Out capability for operation in National Airspace Systems (NAS) worldwide.

With the launch of the RT-2087/ZPX microIFF, uAvionix builds upon its FAA-certified, low-SWaP avionics products for unmanned and manned aircraft.  For more information on the uAvionix line of defense products, including IFF transponders, receivers, GPS, and crypto emulators, visit https://uavionix.com/defense/.
