FAQs
The Details You Need
What is the AV-HSI?
The AV-HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator) is an accessory for the AV-30 that enables the AV-30 to be the primary navigation indicator for IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) flying. It interfaces with GPS and VHF navigation sources to provide en route and approach guidance.
What kind of guidance does the AV-HSI provide?
The AV-HSI provides both lateral and vertical guidance. This includes guidance for ILS (Instrument Landing System) and LPV (Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance) approaches. The course deviation bar scale varies depending on the navigation or approach mode.
What kind of navigation sources can the AV-HSI use?
Can the AV-HSI be used for IFR flying?
Yes, the AV-HSI enables the AV-30 to be used as a primary navigation indicator for IFR flying, including approaches down to LPV minimums. The lateral and vertical deviation overlays provide IFR approach guidance
What is the purpose of the ARINC 429 interface on the AV-HSI?
The AV-HSI uses the ARINC 429 interface to communicate with most panel-mounted GPS navigators. It has three ARINC 429 channels: two receive and one transmit.
Does the AV-HSI work with multiple AV-30 units?
Yes, the AV-HSI can interface with up to four AV-30s, providing navigation data to all of them and acting as an information hub to synchronize data.
What kind of data is synchronized between AV-30s when using the AV-HSI?
The AV-HSI synchronizes heading bug, navigation source, OBS (Omni Bearing Selector), set altitude, set vertical speed, autopilot mode, barometric setting, and any manual DG adjustments across connected AV-30s. It also shares data from an outside air temperature probe if one AV-30 has it.
What are the new display features with the AV-HSI?
What is the new CDI mode on the AV-HSI?
The CDI mode is new with the AV-HSI and mimics a mechanical indicator with digital additions. It shows lateral and vertical guidance for both GPS and VHF navigators. It has a compass ring tied to the OBS setting, which is relevant when tracking a VOR or a radial from a GPS fix.
How does the OBS work with the AV-HSI?
The OBS can be set automatically from the GPS flight plan, or a specific course can be dialed in manually. A long press of the center button will automatically set the OBS to the current bearing to the station.
Does the AV-HSI offer any alerts or safety features?
Yes, the AV-HSI continuously compares the attitude solution of each connected AV-30. If any of the AV-30s disagree on pitch or roll, an alert will appear. This is designed to aid your normal instrument cross-scan
