FAQ's

Learn More about ADS-B In

What kind of traffic will I see with ADS-B In?

With uAvionix ADS-B In solutions like skySensor and ForeFlight Sentry, pilots receive real-time traffic data from ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft via the FAA’s ADS-B ground network and direct air-to-air transmissions on 978 MHz (UAT) and 1090 MHz (ES). This includes aircraft position, altitude, velocity, and heading. However, traffic visibility is limited to ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft, so not all traffic will be displayed unless they are transmitting ADS-B Out data. Traffic Information Service-Broadcast (TIS-B) enhances this by providing data on non-equipped aircraft, but it requires the receiving aircraft to have ADS-B Out from a FAA compliant product such as the tailBeacon or tailBeaconX, both of which have an integrated WAAS GPS position source.

Does ADS-B In provide weather updates in-flight?

Yes, ADS-B In devices like the skySensor and ForeFlight Sentry receive FIS-B (Flight Information Service-Broadcast) data transmitted over the 978 MHz UAT band. This includes METARs, TAFs, NOTAMs, NEXRAD radar imagery, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, and special use airspace (SUA) status updates. These products ensure that pilots have up-to-date weather data for better situational awareness, especially during long cross-country flights or when approaching dynamic weather conditions. The data is displayed on compatible EFB apps such as ForeFlight for easy interpretation.

Can I use ADS-B In with my existing cockpit displays?

uAvionix ADS-B In solutions like the skySensor are designed to integrate seamlessly with the AV-Link and AV-30 multifunction cockpit display. The received air traffic data can be displayed on your AV-30, or on a portable devices like an iPad using EFB apps such as ForeFlight, SkyDemon, Garmin Pilot, etc.

Do I need ADS-B Out to use ADS-B In?

No, you do not need ADS-B Out to use ADS-B In. uAvionix products such as the skySensor and ForeFlight Sentry receive ADS-B In signals independently. However, to take full advantage of TIS-B services provided by the FAA, which include traffic data for non-ADS-B-equipped aircraft, an ADS-B Out signal from your aircraft is required. Without ADS-B Out, your ADS-B In receiver will still display traffic directly from other ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft but will not receive the TIS-B traffic uplink from the FAA’s ADS-B network.

Is ADS-B In coverage available everywhere?

ADS-B In coverage depends on FAA ground stations and the ability to receive direct air-to-air transmissions. uAvionix ADS-B In devices like skySensor and ForeFlight Sentry receive signals in most areas of the U.S., where there is robust ADS-B coverage from ground stations. However, coverage may be limited at very low altitudes, in remote areas with fewer FAA ground stations, or over open water. Air-to-air reception remains unaffected in these scenarios, allowing nearby ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft to transmit directly to your receiver.

How easy is it to install an ADS-B In receiver?

uAvionix ADS-B In receivers like the skySensor and ForeFlight Sentry are designed for simple installation. For the skySensor, similar to the skyBeacon, you simply replace the aircraft position light, that’s it! No airframe modifications or additional antennas are required. The ForeFlight Sentry, Sentry Plus and Sentry Mini on the other hand, are portable solutions that requires no fixed installation, operating via a rechargeable battery. Both devices are energy-efficient and require minimal setup to start streaming traffic and weather data via WiFi and the GDL-90 protocol to compatible devices and EFB apps.
