In the second quarter of 2022, uAvionix celebrated its 50,000th ADS-B OUT shipment into the global General Aviation (GA) market. This number combines total shipments into certified and uncertified aircraft and includes the industry-changing skyBeacon, tailBeacon, and tailBeaconX products – specifically designed to reduce total cost of ownership by minimizing installation time. Also included is echoUAT, the lowest cost ADS-B IN and OUT solution on the market for experimental aircraft and SkyEcho 2, the revolutionary portable ADS-B OUT Electronic Conspicuity (EC) device approved for use in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
The 50,000 ADS-B OUT solutions are a subset of over 600,000 ADS-B solutions delivered in total, including ADS-B IN receivers for drones, portable receivers including the Sentry product line in partnership with ForeFlight, and solutions for airport vehicles and surface surveillance for prevention of runway incursions.
In 2019, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) published a report indicating that the likelihood of an accident decreased by 53%, and the likelihood of a fatal accident decreased by 89% for aircraft using ADS-B IN. Intuitively, uAvionix grasped this concept from the start.
“Our original vision for the company” says Paul Beard, CEO, “was that ADS-B was going to be a critical technology for the integration of drones into the airspace. I was scared to death of the prospect that a drone might take me out in my helicopter. We like to say that ‘ADS-B is drone repellent’ – If we could figure out how to miniaturize the technology for use on a drone and allow the drones to see and avoid me, we can solve a problem before it becomes a problem. We had a mission.”
In 2017, that mission expanded to include equipping as many GA aircraft as possible. “We were watching the FAA’s ADS-B mandate creep closer and closer, with the high cost causing equipage rates to fall further and further behind,” says Ryan Braun, COO. “We knew we hit on a needle-moving idea with skyBeacon that year at EAA AirVenture, when the FAA kept coming back to our booth, encouraging us to pursue certification.”
The mission to create safe airspace for all by advancing ADS-B continues with tailBeaconX. Its unique design was crafted specifically to provide a lower-cost solution for countries leveraging space-based ADS-B, such as Canada, South Africa, Iceland, and the UK. It took more than a year of flight testing and analysis of 7000 hours and 4 million data points to convince Nav Canada to amend their mandate language, which previously required a diversity transponder, but now includes designs like tailBeaconX, costing aircraft owners 70% less than they would have spent equipping with traditional diversity systems. uAvionix is currently offering a trade-up program to exchange skyBeacon, tailBeacon, or echoUAT for credit towards a tailBeaconX.
Join us in Oshkosh at EAA AirVenture, booths 3081 and 195A to meet the team, ask questions and see demos of tailBeacon, skyBeacon, tailBeaconX, and AV-30 in action. Leverage our trade-in program while it lasts directly with us or with one of our many show resellers.
